I seem to have an affliction of taking on projects that require skills I don’t really have. Take jewelry photography for example. I took on the project not really knowing how to shoot jewelry, but knowing that if I provided some nice photos, I’d get money in return. Works for me.
I knew it was probably going to be difficult, and it was. Jewelry is shiny, which means it reflects everything: You, your camera, your dog. You name it. After a few shots to confirm the reflect-everything-shiny-ness (I was in denial), I promptly headed out and picked up a light tent.
A light tent is essentially a white fabric cube with one side open so you can shoot whatever is inside. You then point a flash at the cube, which creates a nice white surface for the jewelry to reflect. Sure, if you zoom in far enough, you might still see fido in the reflection, but it’s good enough.
After few hours of jewelry wrangling, I had my shots. Once I got them into my computer, I did a little voodoo photoshop work to produce what you see above. After the break, check out one more piece. (more…)

Shooting a few products in my living room.
Some people use their dining room tables for eating. I use mine as a photo studio. It doesn’t really work for people (or animals), but it’s fine for small objects. Two lights and six pieces of foam-core are all you need. Oh, and a camera. You need one of those, too.
While we’re on the topic of photos, I had the opportunity to tackle two photo shoots over the past month. The first entailed a few portraits for a so-cal company, and the second was for a state-wide magazine.
After the break, take a look at a few fruits of my labor. Enjoy!

The Californian sails in San Diego Bay.
I was approached a few months ago about having a few photos shown at a one night event in downtown San Diego. Since I’ve never had any photos shown, I figured what the h-e-double-hockey-sticks, I’ll do it. So, on April 28th, you can head to downtown San Diego and see four nautical-themed photos on display.
For those of you not in San Diego, I figured I’d give you an advance sneak peek – just don’t tell anyone. You can check out the other three images after the break. If you are in San Diego, here are the event details: Bar Basic – Basic Tuesdays, April 28th, 7pm-2am, 410 10th Ave, San Diego, CA.

Looking towards the ocean at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA.
Jessie and I played hooky from work for a few hours today and took an architecture tour of the famous Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA. The Institute was designed by architect Louis Kahn in the 1960s and if you get a chance, I highly recommend you see the movie about him, called “My Architect.”
For those of you who don’t know about the Institute, it is an incredible place, housing incredibly smart people working on cutting-edge research from neuroscience to cancer.
After the tour, there were too many people around to get any decent shots, so I will be planning to head back for some serious photography. In the meantime, take a look at two more shots of this beautiful place after the break.
