Water crashing onto one of the Coronado Islands.

Last friday was the big Coronado Islands trip. It’s getting late, so here’s a quick recap: 7 hours long, I got sunburned, We saw boobies (the birds, silly), and it was very cool. Thanks, Randy for inviting us!

After the break, enjoy a few more photos.

Few quick updates

No time for an elaborate story. But, here are a few notes from the Sean Popke notebook. I don’t even have a story about the bird above. It’s a bird. With no feathers.

Coronado Islands
This friday, Jessie, my friend Randy and his wife, and I will be heading on a three hour tour (ok, more like 5 hours) of the Coronado Islands. They’re a few miles off the coast of San Diego and actually belong to Mexico. Should be fun. If you want to read a little about them, check out this article. While you’re there, don’t miss the part where a Navy commander named L. Ron Hubbard used them for target practice. And yes, i’m talking about that L. Ron Hubbard.

Meet Sean Popke, iPhone Developer
I’m going to try my hand at developing an iPhone application. I’ve signed up for the program and am ready to go. Honestly, I don’t know how to build an app yet, but I’ll learn. I have one app idea in mind, but if you have any ideas, please send them my way.

Broken Blog
There’s nothing like showing a client your blog and having it not work. If you’re a Internet Explorer 7 user (sorry), then the map pop-ups now work correctly. If you’re using IE 6, then I really don’t know what to say, except upgrade now if at all possible. After all, do you really want to be stuck in 2001?

Oh yeah, and I just realized that the photo above is huge – steal me and use me on your christmas cards huge. Sorry. It’s late and I’m going to bed.

It’s the little things…

If you’re into photography or just like to be in the know, I just wanted to let you know about a few feature changes to the blog. A few months ago, I talked about GeoTagging my photos with location information. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work if there was more than one photo in a post. Now, after a few hours of under-the-hood work, I’ve solved that problem. Now, if you see a Map icon on the right side of a caption, just click on it to see where that photo was taken. Spiffy, I know.

The second, and new, feature is EXIF information. If you’re a photographer, you might know what that is. If not, let me explain. When you take a picture, your camera saves certain information in the image file, such as what your ISO, aperture, and shutter speed were. So, if you’re curious what camera settings I used to take a picture, just look for the camera icon on the right side of the caption and click it. For regular-joe-blog-reader, not so interesting. For photographer-joe-blog-reader, mildly interesting.

Salk Institute Tour

Jessie and I played hooky from work for a few hours today and took an architecture tour of the famous Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA. The Institute was designed by architect Louis Kahn in the 1960s and if you get a chance, I highly recommend you see the movie about him, called “My Architect.”

For those of you who don’t know about the Institute, it is an incredible place, housing incredibly smart people working on cutting-edge research from neuroscience to cancer.

After the tour, there were too many people around to get any decent shots, so I will be planning to head back for some serious photography. In the meantime, take a look at two more shots of this beautiful place after the break.

Not my favorite thing…

Having my picture taken isn’t my favorite thing in the world, but sometimes you do what you gotta do. This was taken for a project I’m working on with a group of very talented people. What do you think?

Feeling Lucky Today?

Go ahead. Google it.
Go ahead. Google it.

I saw this card concept done awhile back. I wondered if it would actually work for my name, and it did! So, I threw together this mockup to see what it would look like. I’ll never actually print these, but it’s a fun concept.

Now that you’ve seen the card, you should go try it out. Also, see if it works for your name.
