The Point in Point Loma

If you ever find yourself in Point Loma, CA, and start heading west, you’ll eventually end up at the “Point” of Point Loma. At that point you’ll find two pieces of San Diego history: the Cabrillo National Monument and the old Point Loma Lighthouse. I had never been out there before, so Jessie suggested we take a drive out there on Saturday.

In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo became the first european to set foot on the west coast of what is now the United States. To commemorate that event, a statue of him was built overlooking the entrance to San Diego bay.

Many years later, in 1855, the Point Loma lighthouse was built to guide ships in safely to the bay. Unfortunately, the lighthouse was often obscured by clouds and fog. In 1891, the light keeper moved to a new lighthouse, built closer to the water.

Finally, on June 28, 2008, I, Sean Popke stepped foot on the Cabrillo National Monument for the first time. Ever. Unfortunately, I don’t think they’ll be building a statue for me.

After the break, take a look at a few photos from the day. Also, take a look at the beautiful photos that Jessie took.

I’m not dead. Just Busy. Really.

I know… I know… I haven’t been keeping up on my blog-posting duties. I’ve been swamped with work, which is usually a good thing. Of course, all work and no play would make Sean a dull boy. So, here’s what I’ve been up to lately…

Jessie and I went to Universal Studios on memorial day weekend. We took the back-lot tram tour. The next weekend, parts of the back lot burned down. Good timing.

A few weeks ago Jessie’s friends came down for a visit. One of them has a two-year-old daughter. We first went over to the Children’s Museum and then over to Balboa Park. We took a ride on the little train. Don’t tell my nephew Erick. He’d be jealous.

I’ve been working on a new website for my company, NineCreative. It’s going to be sweet when it’s done – whenever that is. Hopefully in the next few weeks. If it wasn’t for Internet Explorer 6, I would probably be done by now. Who knew I needed to use “a:hover span” to get my div rollovers to work correctly in IE6. Lame.

In august, Jessie and I are flying up to Montana for my friend’s wedding. Are you surprised that they have airports in Montana? Me too. We’re heading up a few days early to visit Yellowstone national park and see Old Faithful. Pictures will follow. I promise.

Ok, so I think you’re all caught up now. Until next time, my friends.

Hey Cutie, want a, um, Death Cab?

Death Cab for Cutie

I agree, that headline doesn’t make any sense. But, if you were in the know, you’d know what I was somehow talking about Death Cab for Cutie, the band. Jessie and I ventured out into the June heat wave on Friday and caught them at SDSU’s Open Air Theater – more affectionally known as the OAT.

Before I go any further, i’m sure you’re curious how they came up with that name. I was too. Apparently, “Gibbard took the band name from the title of the song written by Neil Innes and Vivian Stanshall and performed by their group the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band in the Beatles’ 1967 film Magical Mystery Tour.” Who knew? Thanks Wikipedia!

So… Bonzo Dog Doo Dah? Really? I looked them up on iTunes and they really do exist. I even found the song. Take a listen here. A word of caution though. It’s bad.

Ok, back to the concert. I’m happy to say that DCFC put on a great show. They played a few songs from their new album, Narrow Stairs, and some oldies-but-goodies. One of their last songs was “I will follow you into the dark,” which made all the girls cry and hug their boyfriends. Touching, really. Ha.

Death Cab for Cutie is definitely Sean recommended and Sean approved.
